KIOWATT in Roost / Bissen

On the 20th october 2021, our class 2GSE went within the scope of ETCAS (étude de cas) on a school visit to the company Kiowatt, in Bissen.

Kiowatt is the brainchild of LuxEnergie and François group. Kiowatt is known for using every bit of energy in the most efficient way. The company recycles biomass and in particular wood waste and turns it into energy: heat and cold and electrical energy to be injected into the public grid. The badger pellets are produced from fresh wood.

Before the day of the visit, we had to prepare the visit on our own, like for example calling the company to make sure if they could make the meeting possible and we also had to think about the route.

Later, we had to choose a topic that we would have to present in front of the class, the week after our visit. The topics that we had to choose were between the technical aspect (production of heat, production of cold, production of pellets), environmental and economical point of view.

Catja and Daniela ended up receiving the topic of the heat production, we wrote some questions down which were all later answered with the help of the video, they had shown us during the visit.

The beating heart of Kiowatt is a cogeneration plant where combustion of rebuttal wood produces heat and electrical energy.

The excess heat, generated by the combustion process, dries wood, which was chopped into thin wafers to produce pellets and the other excess goes to the production of cold for cooling the LuxConnect data centre. Wood waste is the primary source of energy that powers the cogeneration plant boiler simply because humanity wastes a lot of wood. Most of the rebuttal wood come for example from old furniture.

Even though it was difficult to know what each single machine does and what they are there for, because there are simply just too many, overall, it was very interesting to improve our knowledge on this subject and to see how much that really goes into this job.

Cloé and Sarah have chosen to understand how the cold production works. The heat that Kiowatt produces is divided into three different sections. The first would be to produce pellets. The second for the community of Roost and Bissen to heat their buildings and the final use of this heat is to produce cold. To do this, they use two absorption refrigerators, each with a capacity of 2500 kW.
The intention is to cool down the LuxConnect data centre, which is located right across from Kiowatt. This Data center is the first green data center in the world, because it doesn’t outsource to cool its building. Instead, it uses excess heat that Kiowatt doesn’t need. This makes the whole cooling process much more efficient and sustainable. Making it a more ecofriendly way to proceed compared to other companies.
