On Wednesday, the 4th of March 2026, we visited the Plitvice Lakes National Park together with all the participating schools. The goal of the excursion was to learn more about Croatian nature, culture, and the efforts made to preserve the country’s unique wildlife and natural landscapes.
We left Zagreb by bus at 7:45 a.m. and travelled to our destination. The park is the largest national park in Croatia and is famous for its beautiful lakes and waterfalls.
We arrived at the park at around 10 a.m., where we were welcomed by our guide, who accompanied us throughout the tour. At the beginning, the guide explained the structure of
the park and introduced us to the two main sections of the lake system: the Upper Lakes and the Lower Lakes.
The Upper Lakes include Prošćansko jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko jezero, Malo jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milino jezero, Gradinsko jezero, Burgeti, and Kozjak. The Lower
Lakes consist of Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac, and Novakovića Brod.
The Upper Lakes were formed on impermeable dolomite rock. They are larger and have more indented and gentler shores. In contrast, the Lower Lakes were formed on permeable limestone and lie in a deep canyon with steep cliffs.
Both lake systems end at the impressive Sastavci waterfalls, where the Korana River begins its course.
During our walk along the wooden paths, we followed the riverbanks and passed many waterfalls, seeing numerous beautiful and impressive natural sights.
Around midday, we took a break at a restaurant near the riverbank, where we had lunch together.
After lunch, we continued our excursion and took a small electric boat across one of the lakes. During the ride, our guide explained the history of the largest lake and described the
many efforts made to protect this unique natural area.
After about a 20-minute boat ride, we continued our hike through the park. Along the way, we stopped at several more breathtaking viewpoints before our excursion slowly came to an end.
Finally, we returned by bus and arrived back at our hotel in Zagreb in the evening. It was a wonderful trip during which we experienced stunning natural scenery and gained a
deeper understanding of the importance of protecting such unique environments.
